Maboneng Precinct ist ein Szeneviertel in Johannesburg, welches sich von einer kriminellen, heruntergekommenen No go-Area zu einem trendigen In-Stadtteil gewandelt hat. Maboneng, ein Sotho-Wort, bedeutet ‚Platz des Lichts‘. Der Name ist passend, denn die Helligkeit, die dort vor einem Jahrzehnt noch unvorstellbar gewesen wäre, strahlt die Gegend inzwischen tatsächlich aus – lebendig, dynamisch und kreativ.
Restaurants, Cafés, Kunstgalerien, Modestores, Einzelhändler und Ateliers – der Distrikt lockt nicht nur die Einwohner Johannesburg selbst, sondern auch Interessierte (vor allem Kunstbegeisterte) aus dem Umland sowie internationale Touristen an.
Der Stadtentwickler und Investor Jonathan Liebmann machte das Unmögliche möglich – nach seinem Auslandsjahr kehrte er beflügelt und begeistert von anderen Städten und der dortigen Lebensart nach Johannesburg zurück und startete im Alleingang mit der Umsetzung seiner Vision. Er gab dem Viertel sein aktuell so angesagtes, strahlendes Gesicht und hauchte ihm den frischen Lebensatem ein, der uns heute so begeistert. Eine neue Ära für Maboneng Precinct. Liebmann und sein Team verwandelten industriell geprägte Bauten in kulturelle Oasen und schafften so neuen Lebensraum. Vor elf Jahren wurden fünf Lagergebäude in das Kulturzentrum ‚Arts on Main‘transformiert – eines der beiden Hauptkomplexe in Maboneng. Coffee Shops, Restaurants, künstlerische Hotspots und kreative Macher prägen das Viertel. Städtische Apartments, Rooftop Bars, Co-Working Spaces und ein Publikum, das diverser nicht sein könnte, prägen den Stadtteil, der nunmehr den Namen ‚Platz des Lichts‘verdient.

Maboneng Precinct is a scene-district in Johannesburg, which has changed from a criminal, come down no-go area to a trendy suburban area. Maboneng, a Sotho word, means ‚place of light‘. The name fits well, because the brightness that would have been unimaginable there a decade ago actually radiates the area – vibrant, dynamic and creative.
Restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, fashion stores, retailers and studios – the district attracts not only the people of Johannesburg itself, but also interested people (mainly art lovers) from the surrounding area as well as international tourists.
The city developer and investor Jonathan Liebmann made the impossible possible – after his year abroad, he returned winged, inspired and enthusiastic about other cities and the local way of life back to Johannesburg and started with the implementation of his vision on his own. He gave the district its current, bright face and breathed the fresh life breath that inspires us today. A new era for Maboneng Precinct. Liebmann and his team transformed industrial buildings into cultural oases, creating new living space. Eleven years ago, five warehouse buildings were transformed into ‚Arts on Main‘, one of the two main complexes in Maboneng. Coffee shops, restaurants, artistic hotspots and creative creators characterize the district. Urban apartments, rooftop bars, co-working spaces and an audience that couldn’t be more diverse characterize the district, which now deserves the name ‚place of light‘ more than ever before.
