Braids are in fashion. But not the braids that remind of grandmothers and schoolgirls. No, rather a rebellious-looking hairstyle that brings combative images of women to the front. To date, this has even appeared in connection with fantasy and sci-fi movies and video games, such as Katness Everdeen in Hunger Games, Lagertha in Vikings, Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones and Lara Croft in the game of the same name. Now, however, designers have discovered the look for themselves, which seems to signal an increase in dynamic strength, especially in view of feminist debates. For the season SS2019, Alexander Wang sent models with braids in wet style over the catwalk, Max Mara and Christian Dior presented braided hair for their SS2020 collections on the catwalks. Not to forget the impressions apart from film and fashion: Greta Thunberg, figurehead of the ‚Fridays for Future‘ movement, also wears two braids.

Braids are among the oldest hairdressing techniques in the world. Numerous peoples and cultures were and are associated with plaited pigtails – whether Egyptians in antiquity, Europeans in the Renaissance or African Yoruba in the present, to name just a few examples. Braided hairstyles have always had tradition – as a sign of struggle and resistance – in contrast to the moral conceptions that are common today in the West. An example in this context is the culture of the Celts in Europe, the Maasai in Africa or samurai in ancient Japan.

Zöpfe machen Mode. Damit sind nicht etwa brave Flechten gemeint, die an Großmutters Zeiten oder Schulmädchen erinnern. Nein, vielmehr rebellisch anmutendes Frisurwerk, das kämpferische Frauenbilder nach Vorne bringt. Bis dato trat ebendieses mehr noch in Zusammenhang mit Fantasy- und Scifi-Filmen sowie Videospielen in Erscheinung, man denke an Katness Everdeen in Tribute von Panem, Lagertha in Vikings, Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones und Lara Croft im gleichnamigen Game. Nunmehr haben jedoch auch Designer den Look für sich entdeckt, der gerade angesichts feministischer Debatten ein Plus an dynamischer Stärke zu signalisieren scheint. So schickte Alexander Wang für die Saison SS2019 Models mit Zöpfen im Wet-Stil über den Laufsteg, Max Mara und Christian Dior präsentierten geflochtenes Haar für ihre Kollektionen SS2020 auf den Catwalks. Neben den Impressionen aus Film und Mode nicht zu vergessen: Auch Greta Thunberg, Gallionsfigur der ‚Fridays for Future‘-Bewegung, trägt Zopf.

Zöpfe zählen zu den ältesten Frisiertechniken der Welt. Zahlreiche Völker und Kulturen waren und sind Flechten verbunden – ob Ägypter im Altertum, Europäer in der Renaissance oder afrikanische Yoruba in der Gegenwart, um nur einige wenige Beispiele zu nennen. Dabei haben Zopffrisuren seit jeher – ganz im Kontrast zu heute im Westen gängigen, sittlichen Vorstellungen – mitunter Tradition als Zeichen von Kampf und Widerstand. Beispielhaft in diesem Kontext ist die Kultur der Kelten im europäischen Raum, der Massai in Afrika oder Samurai im alten Japan.
